What is English Fluency and How to Get Fluent

“…the smoothness or flow with which sounds, syllables, words and phrases are joined together when speaking quickly.”

This is a textbook definition of fluency. But, what does fluency mean to you?

Gabby’s answer is, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.

When it comes to mastering a new language, we all have our own unique goals. It’s important to remember these goals as you tackle the task that is studying a foreign language.

The first step is asking yourself if you want to speak “World English” or “American English” or one of the many different classifications of English.

World English is not as concerned with grammar and proper sentence structure. It requires high frequency vocabulary. (Vocabulary that is used most often.) If you want to understand a variety of accents and be able to communicate with people from different backgrounds, this is the way to go.

Another important thing to know is your purpose for learning a new language.

If you want to do business, then you’ll use a different set of vocabulary than what is needed for a cashier in a restaurant. If you are in the medical profession, you won’t use the same words for working as a train conductor.

So, take the time to figure this out and clearly define your intentions. That will make learning English a much easier process.
