The Perfect Sentence in English
Do you spend a lot of time thinking about how to form the perfect sentence in English? This is a common habit that English learners have, especially if you’re not feeling very confident yet. You start second-guessing yourself, asking yourself questions like:
What’s a clever thing to say?
What’s that complicated word I learned?
What’s the correct way to say what I want to say?
The problem is when you stop to think about all these questions, it results in a lot of hesitation.
The Solution to Hesitation and Improving Your Fluency
When you think too much, you hesitate. Surprisingly, the solution to your problem may be to actually think less. Just go for it and say the first thing that comes to mind. Keep it simple.
You will appear more fluent if you answer questions or add to a conversation quickly, even if it is a simple answer. Don’t be afraid if you’re not sure how to fully express what you mean. You can always say, “I’m not sure how to say this in English…” or “How can I say this…”
If you are a person who feels better when you plan ahead, then prepare some “scripts” that you can follow. Scripts are phrases or questions that you have memorized, you are familiar with them, and you can use them in a variety of situations.
What to Say When You Don’t Know What to Say
(and How to Sound More Fluent)
Wen you really have no idea what to say, you might need to stall for time while you think. Some useful phrases and questions include:
Can I ask you a question?
I’d like to say something.
I’m stuck on what to say right now…
What do you think?
