Storytelling Practice in English: How to Describe Your Favorite Day
For Intermediate ESL Learners – Focus on Past Tense, Descriptive Vocabulary, and Confidence
Have you ever wanted to sound more fluent and natural when speaking English? One of the best ways to do that is through storytelling — especially when you describe real moments from your life.
In this lesson from Go Natural English, you’ll learn how to tell a story about your favorite day using past tense verbs, descriptive vocabulary, and emotion to sound confident and fluent.
Why Storytelling Helps You Become Fluent
Storytelling isn’t just for writers or entertainers — it’s a powerful skill in real-life English. Whether you’re in a job interview, chatting with a friend, or posting online, being able to describe past experiences clearly and confidently helps you connect with people.
When you practice telling stories, you also build your grammar, vocabulary, and fluency — all at the same time.
A Model Story: Gabby’s Favorite Day
Let’s start with an example story from Gabby, the creator of Go Natural English. She tells it clearly and slowly, using rich, descriptive vocabulary and past tense:
“It was last summer, and I had planned a short trip to the beach with my best friend. The sun was shining, the air was warm, and the ocean looked so peaceful. We spent the whole afternoon swimming, laughing, and talking about our dreams. Then, we had a delicious seafood dinner by the water. I remember the taste of fresh grilled fish and the sound of the waves. I felt so happy, relaxed, and alive. It was simple… but perfect.”
This story is powerful because it uses senses, emotions, and vivid details. Let’s break it down so you can create your own version.
How to Structure Your Story
Here are five guiding questions to help you tell your story. Use complete sentences and past tense verbs:
- When was it?
“It was last year…” / “It was a few weeks ago…” - Where were you?
“I was at the beach.” / “We were in the mountains.” - Who were you with?
“I was with my best friend.” / “I spent the day alone, and it was peaceful.” - What did you do?
Use past tense action verbs:
“We walked…” “We talked…” “I ate…” “We explored…” - What made that day special?
Use feelings and sensory details:
“The weather was amazing.”
“The food smelled so good.”
“I felt free and happy.”
Practice aloud:
“I remember the sound of the waves.”
“The food was delicious.”
“I felt relaxed and grateful.”
Speaking Practice: Your Turn
Now it’s your turn to speak out loud. Answer each question below in English:
- When was your favorite day?
- Where were you?
- Who were you with?
- What did you do?
- How did you feel? What made it special?
Take your time, and say your answers out loud. Practicing speaking is one of the best ways to build fluency!
Challenge: Share Your Story
